Álvaro Zunini, creative VP of Havas Vale, talks about the untapped opportunity in Latin America and how he’s managed to inspire others through his actions.

"We have the potential to keep on building more and more creative credibility."

Teaching isn’t just about talking—it’s about doing. Álvaro Zunini, Creative VP of Havas Vale in Mexico, shares some simple advice on how to inspire others through example.

Tell us about your background.

I started my career as an illustrator and graphic designer; later, I delved even deeper into my studies, focusing on art history and painting. And then, I worked for several creative agencies, including JWT, Leo Burnett and now called MullenLowe Group, just to name a few.

And what unique opportunities encouraged you to join Havas Vale in Mexico?

I was ready for a new challenge, namely someplace where I could help develop the creative profile of a network—a place that also had remarkable offers in terms of media services.

What’s the most interesting thing about working at Havas?

My experience in Argentina at agency Agulla & Baccetti and also at Lowe had a strong influence on my way of thinking; before that, I had been mainly focused on design and art direction. But at Havas, I had the opportunity to work shoulder to shoulder with extraordinary talent who helped me hone my skills to become a better scriptwriter and creative.

I feel there is a great window of opportunity in Havas LATAM; indeed, we have the potential to keep on building more and more creative credibility. We will certainly be within the top-five best advertising networks in Latin America in the near future. That’s my honest belief.

What inspires you?

Contemporary art exhibitions, cinema, and theater. All are great sources of inspiration.

"Don’t be afraid to take risks, and let your creative juices flow."

How do you inspire others?

I consider myself a doer—that’s why I prefer to preach by example. I want to teach others through my actions. In other words, so they can experience how an effective creative process really works by observing my actions.

What makes a creative piece resonate with an audience?

That’s simple: when you hit the right mark with an insight, and then execute it flawlessly. Most of the time we’ve found something truly special, and it’s right in our hands.

How do you define success?

A work of love and inner satisfaction.

What advice do you have for those at the beginning of their careers, say in their 20s and 30s?
Don’t be afraid to take risks, and let your creative juices flow.
