A Trip to the Bookstore

This isn’t anything like your local shop—trust us.

"It felt like the culmination of different experiences of living and working in the Atlanta creative scene wrapped into an event."

Fresh. Modern. Relevant. We go behind-the-scenes at The Annex Bookstore, the network’s latest addition in the ATL. Gavin Guidry, senior art director at The Annex Atlanta, shares plans for their future in the A-Town and reveals how to get an invite to their electric events.

What’s The Annex Bookstore?

The Annex Bookstore is the latest extension of The Annex, a culture-focused network with footprints in Chicago, New York, Singapore—and now Atlanta. The Annex is at the center of culture, where millennials lead content for brands targeting millennials. Just like The Annex in Chicago, Atlanta’s branch will be a platform to elevate the creativity and culture of the city. We call it the bookstore because the building was actually a bookstore for Georgia Tech students back in the day. Now it will serve as a conduit for Atlanta’s creative expression and a workspace for those of us who live in the city.

What was the purpose of this event?

The “Atlanta Influences Everything” party was the launch event for The Annex Bookstore. We wanted to enter the Atlanta market in an impactful way that the local scene would vibe with and enjoy, while also letting the broader Annex and Havas networks know what Atlanta is all about. We worked with my friends here in Atlanta—who coined “Atlanta Influences Everything”—to collab on a theme and merch, and then I plotted to make a party that felt really authentic to the city. The event was part photo show, part live painting, part custom T-shirt printing, and straight-up party.

So, how did the event go?

The event was amazing! The word I’d use is “authentic.” It felt like the culmination of different experiences of living and working in the Atlanta creative scene wrapped into an event. We were able to bring people together from the corporate, agency, creative, and music scenes for a couple of hours to make some great connections. The last time I talked to you guys, I told you how there’s really only one degree of separation in the Atlanta community, so it was really cool to see everyone link up with people from all different kinds of industries.

"There is an untapped creative market here in Atlanta that needs to be displayed to the world."

And what was your favorite part of the night?

My favorite part of the night was watching Atlanta scene legend Ghetto Josh pose next to a photo of himself that was featured in our photo show. Also when DJ Sean Falyon played “Laffy Taffy.” One of the most Atlanta things that could’ve happened.

Tell us: Why Atlanta?

The short answer is that Coca-Cola is the first client for The Annex in Atlanta. But more than that, Atlanta is the epicenter of culture, so this is a place that The Annex needs to be.

During Cannes Lions this year, our Chairman and CEO, Yannick Bolloré, announced the expansion of The Annex network to Los Angeles and Atlanta. How will this expansion help establish The Annex Atlanta as a leader in culture and brand relevance?

Like I said previously, I believe Atlanta is already THE leader in culture, but now, we need to do a better job of telling that story. And all parts of the story, not just the popular parts, like trap, food, and strip clubs. There is an untapped creative market here in Atlanta that needs to be displayed to the world.

What can we expect from the Annex team in Atlanta?

You can expect some award-winning brand work and authentic experiences for the culture.

What excites you most about the future of The Annex?

I’m excited for a lot of things. I’m excited for more people to see what Atlanta has to offer outside of just music. There are so many creators here that go unnoticed but can be huge assets to brands and the world at large. I’m excited to start connecting the dots of talented people that I know here to larger networks and big brands. I’m excited to work with schools and community organizations to help improve Atlanta where we can. I’m excited to, hopefully work with some big Atlanta brands. We’ve got Coca-Cola, but there are many other iconic brands based here in Atlanta that we’d love to work with too.
